Myrtle Jewel Griffin

February 3, 1950 — February 2, 2025

Chicago

Myrtle Jewel Griffin was born on February 3, 1950, to parents Foster & Annie Montgomery. She was the oldest girl and number three (3) of twelve (12) children and had an older sister Lucille Clark. She accepted Christ at a young age at Metropolitan MB Church. Jewel later attended Greater Love MB Church where she served the Lord until she was called home.  She attended John Marshall High School where she was a part of the Student Government and dance. She later decided to pursue her career as a Registered Nurse at Health Occupation School of Vocational Nursing Board of Education and graduated in 1974.

Jewel joined the Black Nursing Association in 2005 and served as an usher at every convention no matter the city or state. She consistently put others’ needs before her because this is truly who Jewel was. She was the matriarch of our family. Her hobbies were cooking, caring for people, and most of all shopping. She could smell a sale a mile away. Wherever you saw Jewel, Tonetta (Pooh), was not far behind. Even though she was her great- granddaughter she raised her from the age of two (2) months to nine (9) years old. Her and Tonetta (Pooh) traveled the world together. She was her travel companion. She was loved by many and was also the favorite Aunt to all her nieces and nephews. Jewel departed February 2, 2025, and she will truly be missed by all.

She proceeded in death Foster (Father) & Annie (Mother) Montgomery, Leroy and Myrtle Jenkins (grandparents) Terrance Cornell Booth (Father of her children), Lucille, Curtis, Hubert, Gwendolyn and Michael (Byrd) (Siblings).  She leaves to mourn Mechelle (daughter) Terry (son) Romonda (daughter). Five grandchildren Kiame, Kalen, Brya, Kyzah, and Bryon. Six great-grandchildren Tonetta, Zaidyn, Amazing, Kyrie, Kamydn, Westyn and Kiyah. Seven siblings Foster, Eunice, Mark (Toni), Greg, John, Dan and Jerome. One auntie Arie Nettles. A special friend better known as “Number 13,” Miss Janice. A bonus son, Keeyon Hickenbottom. A host of nieces, nephews, and family friends. Those who knew Jewel know she loved the Lord, and she would encourage you to do the same.
